  • Protagonist: Ruth Jefferson
  • Antagonist: Turk Bauer
  • Theme
  • I don't want her touching my son again
  • But Sir...
  • Ruth Jefferson is a nurse and well respected she is hard-working, smart and compassionate. She has developed greatly through the novel because before she had lived in her perfect bubble she had created for herself and when it pops readers see her at her worse and how she overcomes her troubles.
  • "Immediately he pulls my arm behind my back and pushes me face down on the floor, his knee in the small of my back as he zips a plastic tie around my wrist." (126)
  • Turk Bauer is a judgemental, closeminded and cruel person. He is hostile to people of color and thinks of himself as the superior race. Yet readers see his growth at the end of the story he becomes a better man and joined an anti- Defamation league which speaks out about hate. He shares his stories about how hate filled he was and how it would make him feel powerful. He now leads a life where had can help others not hurt.
  • "Brittany Bauer, princess of the white power movement, is actually black."(438)
  • The main theme in the novel is to have more of an open mind mentality and to think before you act. Throughout the novel, readers see that these characters make impulse decisions on people which leads to unneeded conflict. Readers should take this theme into there everyday life and think about there actions and judgments beforehand.
  • "It was not enough to have read Mein Kampf three times. To be one of them, truly, I have to prove myself, and Raine promised me I'd know where and when the right moment came to pass." (37)
  • The arrest of Ruth Jefferson had painted an image on how brutal and flawed it had been. It had been 3 am when the police had busted down her door and detained her. They had used extreme force even though she had done everything they said. Also, they had cuffed her son and called him a "threat" when had done nothing threating or wrong.
  • Mama?
  • When Brit had been confronted by her black mother it had shown the irony in her situation. Her whole life she had been told that black people are horrible and to find out she is half black it had flipped her world upside down. Her world around had been a lie and she had been unable to handle the truth about who she truly is.
  • No. No
  • The Skinheads is a group that Brit and Turk Bauer proudly take part in. This group hates everybody that isn’t white or chooses to live an alternative lifestyle. This group is a symbol of hate in the story and it shows that cruel ways that people can have.
