Mrs. Stevenson is in her dark room lonely and in poor health condition. In paragraph 10, it states, "It's my husband's office. He's working late tonight, and I'm all alone here in this house. My health is very poor-and I've been feeling so nervous all day-."
The operator hears to what Mrs. Stevenson has to say and connects her with Murray Hill 4-0098, then transferred it to Mrs. Stevenson. In paragraph 24, it states, "...You know the address. At eleven fifteen a subway train crosses the bridge. It makes a noise in case her window is open and she should scream."
Mrs. Stevenson starts hearing some violent words and then starts to worry. In paragraph 29, it states, "A knife okay. Remember remove the rings and bracelets from the bureau drawer. Our client wishes it to be like a simple robbery." At that point she knew what seemed to be happening so she hanged up.
