  • The simple things become become difficult, running water, fresh food, or even a safe place all become everyday struggles to find. 1.3 billion children struggle with this every day. Children that experience  poverty deal with a great amount of stress which effects their education and behavior.  
  • Poverty: The State of being Extremely poor. 
  • "Zane ans I used to gather empty pizza boxes,candy wrappers,gutted McDonald's Happy Meals,and play restaurant. pretend to eat the food that used to be inside the wrappers"(Macy,13) Hunger is a problem that often affects low income families, because living in poverty means that people are often going without basic needs.
  • Macy and her brother are living in a state of poverty. They have to spend their time looking for food instead of being a kid or worrying about their education.  
  • "Every once in a while we would find a stray skittle or something. A few days before Zane got kidnapped we split a dumb dumb some kid dropped. rinsed it off. he took a look and then I did. Some how we got full off that."(Macy, 13) 
  • Poverty effects both education and behavior in children struggling with poverty .
  • "There is a High rate of untreated mental illness that is in populations struggling with poverty compared to wealthier populations." (behavior)
  • Macy, the main character has many outburst and is labeled disturbed because of it, she also uses incorrect grammar like "always-never".
  • "Children living in poverty tend to hear less reciprocal conversations and are are engaged in conversations with less complex vocabulary."(education)  
  • " children living in poverty tend to be exposed to more stress. more intense & longer lasting stress that negatively impacts attention, focus, cognition,IQ and social skills."(poverty)
  • "children who consume highly processed food were most likely to be hyperactive than those who do not." Macy and her brother don't always have the money for food so they sometimes have to get their meals for the garbage which in the long run will start to effect their health.(education)
