Apprenticeship:When Karim arrives to New York, he wants to stay and live with his friend Charlie, who had become very famous. However, Charlie’s lifestyle is not what Karim had expected. He feels ill-at-ease and fails to adapt himself to such a way of living. His journey in New York is a real disillusionment.
Maturity: Anwar was like an uncle to Karim. He was strongly attached to the Indianculture and his death ignited this feeling inside Karim’s heart. Indeed, attending to Anwar’s funeralmade Karim grow spiritually as he realized how important the Indian culture was to him.
Apprenticeship: Karim’s education, or rather his lack of education plays an interestingly important part in his life. Insofar as it helps him build his personality. At school, he was bullied andsuffered a lot from racism. He eventually failed his exams and dropped out of the educationalsystem, in order to find his true place in life.
Maturity: Karim is fundamentally good. He does not consider himself superior to the others in any way, that’s why he works for Eva in her flat when he has the time. He also thinks about Eleanor and manages to get her to work for Eva too.
Acceptance and Remedy: Pykes tells the truth to Karim about his relationship with Eleanor. He gets sad and disapointed. He feels betrayed and used. However, he keeps going forward.
