Do you ever wonder why teens make rushed decisions. If so, come with me!
Decision Making in TeensBy Emma Becker Blk E Due Nov. 7th
Because our limbic system (emotional system) is mature and our prefrontal cortex ( logical system) is not, we often make decisions based on our feelings.
This can sometimes have negative effects. For example, we are prone to make rushed decisions and to being peer pressured
Smoking is really cool. Why don't you smoke?
I am so mad!
The process of decision making is similar too a kid going down a slide. The kid is like the information, the parents the cell bodies, the slide the axon and myelin sheath, the dendrite the parents dropping or catching the kid, the terminals wherever the kid could go, and the synapse where the mom catches her.
Myelination is when axons wrap themselves in a fatty substance ( myelin sheath) which increases the speed of the process, similar to a car engine. Synaptic pruning is when weak synapses are removed, similar to a haircut.
These processes are healthy and we can increase them by challenging our brains, therefore becoming healthier. For example we can join a sport or do critical thinking puzzles.
