Sarajevo in Bosnia was preparing for a royal visit from Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria. However, six teenage terrorists planned to kill the Archduke because they hated him and Austria.
The first two terrorists got scared and escaped but the third assassin threw his bomb, swallowed poison and jumped into the river. The Archduke saw the bomb coming and threw it off his car but it exploded under the car next to him.
The Archduke was driven to the town hall where he demanded to be taken to visit the bomb victims in hospital. Fearing more terrorists, the officials decided to take a new route to avoid the crowds, but this was not properly explained to the driver of the Archduke's car.
All but one assassin assumed that the Archduke was dead. Princip soon discovered the truth and was standing outside a cafe at 10:45 when the Archdukes car suddenly appeared beside him- a mistake according to the new plan for the procession.
Princip pulled an automatic pistol out of the right hand pocket of his coat. He fired a shot at the Archduke and pierced his neck. Fifteen minutes later, he died. Princip swallowed his poison but it did not work so he was taken to prison.
Princip and all but one plotter were eventually caught and sent to Jail. Princip died in an Austrian jail in April 1918, aged 23.
