  • The Missouri Compromised allowed slave states to expand as long as they stayed below the 36-30 line.

  • Souther Slaves States: Beliefs about states rights?
  • The 30-36 line will allow us to continue to expand slavery farther westward.
  • They worried that the compromise would allow the slave states to move west , they also feared that the slave states would gain more power in Congress since they would have more states.
  • Southern Slave States: Fears about the compromise?
  • We can't let the Northern states take advantage of the compromise to stop us from expanding westward or possibly ending slavery
  • The Southern slave states felt possitively towards the compromise because it would add a slave state to the union and also keep slavery expanding westward.
  • Southern slave states felt positively towards state's rights because it would mean they could continue to expand slavery westward as long as it was under the 36-30 line.
  • They feared that the compromise could threaten the expansion of slavery or lead to the end of slavery, because Congress had the power to choose whether states were free or slave states.
