  • Type of Program:-Public school that is part of an Elementary School-Available and affordable to all demographics-Opportunities for mixed-age experiences-Strong ties between administration and teaching/para staff-Open to variations in pedagogical approaches-Prioritizes student and staff needs

  • Philosophy of Learning:-Project-based with open-ended opportunities for creative exploration and intentional play-Developmentally Appropriate practices and materials are use for each age group-Student-driven — Students take charge of their own learning

  • Physical Space:-Big, wide open areas to support freedom of movement-Centers with open-ended, manipulative materials placed throughout the classroom safely-Lots and lots of books!!!-Outdoor playground-Gardening space-Indoor gym with age appropriate equipment-Nature trails and other opportunities for outdoor exploration nearby
  • Curriculum:1. Culturally Relevant: It is critical that students feel represented by the materials the encounter in the classroom.2. Flexible: Each grade level and class has different needs that must be met. The chosen curriculum should be adaptive to these needs.
  • 3. School-wide curriculum needs to strike a balance between structure and flexibility. It is critical that teachers are free to implement curriculum in the manner they believe is most appropriate. At the same time, there should be strong enough foundation for educators to build from and expand.
  • Staffing:-Classes will have no more than 16 students with 1 credentialed teacher-There will be 1 Teaching Assistant for every 8 students in a classroom-Vertical integration across grade levels and administrative staff-Ample opportunities for advancement and professional development-Strong culture of supporting after-school/extracurricular activities
  • Family Relationships:-Consistent Communication for both positive and problematic moments. Share the uh oh's! AND the aha'a!-Regular special events for families to get involved with school functions. Strong culture of parent volunteerism-Consistent school-wide approach to messaging
