Victoria was nervous coming to the river. Chris spots a landmark showing a sign they are close to safety. She takes her hatchet and hits the ice hard two times. It stays frozen solid and she approves it is safe to cross. As they cross, Drift sees two otters and runs at them, causing commotion. The ice begins to crack.
The surface of the ice breaks and they are submerged into the icy water. The dogs tangle in ropes and scramble around frantically. The dogs are being submerged one by one into the icy waters. If the sled sinks the dogs will die. Victoria frantically tries to get the dogs untied and up on the surface. It takes a while but she gets the sled up. All her valuables are gone. They are dangerously cold.
They to continue along the trail. The dogs are so exhausted as well as Victoria and Chris. Their bodies were numb from the cold. They didn't think they'd make it any further. They make it to their old yurt and they go to sleep. They are freezing and need to make it back safely the next morning.
