  • The Safavid Empire began in 1501, lead by Shah Ismail (1501-1524). 
  • The Safavid Empire included Iran, Iraq, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, and parts of Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, and Pakistan.
  • The location of the trade routes lead to the strength on the empires economy. 
  • One of Shah Ismail's most important decisions was to declare that the empires religion would be the form of Islam called Shi'ism.
  • The Safavids where know for there beautiful handmade carpets. Now these authentic carpets would be worth thousands of dollars. 
  • The Safavid Empire was strengthen by enemy soldiers. They were Shi'a soldiers from the Ottoman army who had fled from persecution.
