  • "My father was crying. It was the first time I saw him cry. I had never thought it possible." (Wiesel, 19) He had never seen his father cry before, so he knew that the situation was worse than he thought.
  • Lots.
  • Having fun?
  • "Most people thought that we would remain in the ghetto until the end of the war, until the arrival of the Red Army. The ghetto was ruled by neither German nor Jew; it was ruled by delusion." (Wiesel, 12) No one really knew what was going on, they just figured life would go back to normal in a couple of weeks.
  • "They were forced to dig huge trenches. When they finished their work, the Gestapo began theirs." (Wiesel, 6) The people were forced to dig their own graves and then were shot. The babies were thrown into the air and used as target practice. 
  • "The bible commands us to rejoice during the eight days of celebration, but our hearts were not in it. We wished the holiday to end so us not to have to pretend." (Wiesel, 10) They cannot enjoy their holiday celebrations because of the German presence in their area.
