Eugene Talmadge ran for governor. He promised to bring back the White Primary if he was elected. He had an illness that very few people knew about. He died after being elected sparking the 3 Governors Controversy.
One of the people who claimed they were governor was M.E. Thompson. He was the lieutenant governor. According to the constitution, if something happens to the governor, the lieutenant governor would take the place.
I'm the lieutenant governor!
Herman Talmadge also claimed that he should be governor. He had received the most write-in votes. Oddly, all of the votes had the same handwriting. Some people were also not alive or not known. At first he was governor, but the government realized what happened, and Herman Taldmadge would no longer be governor
I received the most votes.
Ellis Arnall was the last person that claimed they were governor. He was the current governor when Talmadge was elected. He believed he should just stay where he was.
I am governor right now!!
When the problem went to court, they ruled that M.E. Thompson would be governor because he was elected Lietenant Governor. According to the Constitution, if something were to happen to the governor, the lieutenant governor would take the place.
