Storyboard Text

  • Abraham Lincoln:
  • On this day, January 1, 1863, I issue the Emancipation Proclamation which declares that all persons held as slaves are, and henceforward shall be free.
  • This event happened as the United States was approaching its third year of Civil War. The South was angry and didn't want to follow the new proclemation; they wanted to keep their slaves.
  • The liberated slaves became the liberators because they were able to join the US Army and Navy. Although this law made many southerners angry, it finally gave the slaves the freedom they deserved.
  • The Emancipation Proclamation also led to the signing of the 13th Amendment and ensured that forever after, "neither slavery nor involuntary servitude ... shall exist within the United States
  • Things were finally beginning to become equal for slaves of the southern states.
  • The End
