  • Great question! Conduction is a type of heat transfer that transfers thermal energy through direct contact. One example of conduction is when you are on the beach. The hot sand transfers thermal energy directly to your feet, making them hot.
  • Ok, but what is a second type of heat transfer?
  • Convection is the type of heat transfer that transfers thermal energy by the movement of fluids such as water and air. One example of convection is a hot-air balloon. The air particles in the balloon start to rise when the balloon gets heated, but then the balloon goes down when the particles start to cool.
  • What is the last type of heat transfer, radiation?
  • Yes! Radiation is the type of heat transfer that emits thermal energy through electromagnetic waves. One general example on how this works is the sun's radiation. The sun sends rays through Earth's atmosphere, and that thermal energy heats the ground, as well as us up on a sunny day.
