Here, at the beginning of the book, in 1975: Year of the Cat, Ha is rebellious, and when she doesn't agree with the rule that a male must rise first to bless the house she says: "I decided/to wake before dawn/and tap my big toe/to the tile floor/first."
Toward the middle of the story, Ha is developing into a different person. She is no longer as rebellious, and just wants her old life, that seems normal, compared to the chaotic one she has now. She wants now just wants Brother Quang to "keep it to: How are you?, this is a pen.", instead of going in-depth and learning a lot more like she used to.
Here in Last respects, Ha i now a more caring character, especially to her brothers, and is more closely bonded with them now after fleeing their home. When Brother Khoi's chick that he hatched and brought on the ship is killed, "I hold his hand 'Come with me' " and wraps up her doll with his chick in their mom's handkerchief, and throws the bundle into the sea.
