  • France was in a financial crisis, so King Louis XVI calls for the Estates General Meeting. The three classes listed grievances for the King and they would vote on what to do to solve the problem. Each group only had one vote, the first and second estate outvoted the third estate. So the government remained as a Monarchy.
  • March on the Versailles
  • We want bread!
  • Shame on the Queen!
  • The third estate called themselves the National Assembly. They went to the Kings tennis court and pledged to not leave until they got a just constitution, causing a movement towards democracy.
  • The Reign of Terror
  • The king sent royal troops to Paris, and rumors spread that he was trying to take down the Assembly. On July 14th, 1789, the National Assembly gathered outside of Bastille. They believed there were weapons in there. The commander refused to let them in and open fired at the crowd. Many were killed but the crowd broke through the defenses and killed the commander. This was the start to a revolution.

  • I'm going to take over the world!
  • Thousands of women marched 13 miles from Paris to Versailles demanding bread. They were mainly angry at the Queen because she lived in a life of luxury. They refused to leave Versailles until the king returned to Paris, and so he agreed.
  • The King and Queen tried to hide and escape, disguised as a servant. The King was seen as a traitor and both him and the Queen were beheaded by the guillotine. This caused a Republic government. Robespierre went around killing about seventeen thousand people who were seen as traitors.

  • Napoleon had a lot of military success, and he crowned himself Emperor and started new reforms such as fairer taxes, created public schools and allowed peasants to own land.
