This is a new American family. They moved here from Italy. Marie and her mother Rosa work for The Triangle Waist Company.
This place is too crowded! We also demand that we get payed more for what we do!!
Marie and Rosa worked among many other women in a sweatshop sewing shirtwaists. All of the exits were locked.
Me too! I am tool tired to work!
I want better working hours! I want more sleep...
On March 25th, 1911 a fire broke out at the Triangle Waist factory. Many women were trapped inside due to the doors being shut and locked. Many managed to escape while others were burned alive inside and others jumped to their death.
They are all piled against the doors... something needs to change!
After the fire, there was another protest. This time they demanded change!
The commission finally issued ways to prevent what had happened from happening. It was now illegal to shut and lock the doors, block stairways and there were better escapes and fire alarms.
