  • 1. Ball at rest
  • FGrav
  • Newton's 1st Law = Law of Inertia Through Soccer
  • FNorm
  • The ball is at rest. There is gravity pulling it down to the ground.
  • The player is applying force to the ball, which is moving it to the right side so it can go into the net.
  • 2. Applied force to the ball
  • FApp
  • 3. Ball is stopped by other force
  • FGrav
  • The ball has stopped moving as the goal keeper applied another force that has stopped it's motion.
  • Fnorm
  • 1. Johnny dribbling the ball
  • Action: Applied force from Johnny so the ball can hit the ground
  • Reaction: Ball bounces back, like a spring
  • Newton's 3rd Law = For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction Through Basketball
  • Action: FGrav > FAir Reaction: Fgrav > FSpring Opposite: Up then down
  • Action: Johnny shoots the ball onto the board
  • Johnny applies force to the ball to the right. The ball has spring force and moves back to Johnny.
  • Reaction: The ball lands back into his hands
  • Action: FApp to the board Reaction: Spring force to Johnny Opposite: Away then back to Johnny
  • 2. Johnny shooting the ball onto the backboard
  • Many people argue the reaction is not always equal. If the friction would be equal to the applied force when running, Johnny would not move at all.
  • Action: Johnny runs to the left
  • Reaction: Friction slowing him
  • 3. Johnny is running across the court
