MLK was using a reference to Abraham Lincoln. In Lincolns speech, he said "Four score and seven years ago". It is saying that a very well known and popular president also fought for slavery and rights.
"I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character"
He is using an emotional tie when he is discussing "little boys and little girls"
"...millions of Negro slaves who had been in the flames of withering injustice."
He is using an analogy when he says "the Negro people a bad check, a check which has come back..."
"This note was a promise that all men--yes, black men as well as white men--would be guaranteed the unalienable rights of life,"
This is ethos because he is making a connection to his own kids because they are both colored and are going through the same thing.
