The Toll-House

Storyboard Text

  • The Open Door
  • Ghost Servants!
  • Don't play the fool!
  • The Candle
  • Oh! I didn't stick it enough
  • Sleeping?
  • Now he will believe the house is haunted.
  • Barnes, Lester, Meagle, and White get to the house. The landlord tells them to go threw a back window but Meagle jokingly says they should knock on the door. He knocked and nothing happened but when he put his hands against the door it pushed open. I chose this scene because I think its odd that the landlord said to go threw the window but the door was somehow opened.
  • Footsteps
  • The men went and in an empty room. They got out cards and played. Suddenly, the candle went out and Meagle got hit in the head with the candle from the mantle. He laughed and just said he didn't stick enough. I chose this scene because it said that the candle went out before it fell and struck him on the head. Its strange that it blew out before it fell and hit him.
  • The Cold Air
  • Ah!
  • The men were playing cards when it was Whites turn. They realized that he fell asleep. He shook him but he didn't wake up. Then, Lester also fell asleep. Barnes took the candle and Meagle said they should get out of there. Meagle thought that White and Lester where just faking the falling asleep so when they were leaving he fell onto the hearthstone pretending to fall asleep. I chose this scene because later after Barnes left the others didn't wake up not even when Meagle burnt White's finger.
  • Motionless Figure
  • Barnes?!?!?
  • Meagle got up he told White and Lester to wake up but they didn't. He burnt his finger but he didn't wake up. Then, he heard a noise from the staircase but then stopped when he went to the door. He walked along the passage and heard them scurrying down the stairs and doing a jog-trot along the lower corridor. Then, he heard them in front of him. I chose this scene because I think its one of the most important haunting scenes in the book. I think its important because he could hear the steps of the ghosts running around the house and they stopped when he moved.
  • They are upstairs
  • He followed the footstep into the kitchen. He followed slowly in fear of extinguishing. The door leading into an inside room had just closed. He ran toward it and flung it open. A cold air blew out the candle. He stood aghast. I chose this scene because I think the cold air was a ghost running across the room.
  • He reached the landing and he saw a figure disappear around the corner of a wall. He followed the sound of the steps and tried not to make noise. He whispered "Barnes!" and then something stirred in the darkness. A small window at the end of the passage showed a bit of the motionless figure. Meagle let out a cry he also asked if it was Barnes and there was no reply. I chose this scene because he even saw a figure that could have been a ghost. It also never replied to him.
