  • Guilty!
  • The King is dead!
  • King Louis XVI was tried for treason in January 1792. This occurred because he had been trying to help Austria in a war against France to regain power. Both he and his wife were plotting against France in hopes of coming to power again. The last straw for the people of France was when King Louis and his wife tried to escape France altogether to possibly acquire an army and fight back. After a close vote, he was decided guilty and sentenced to death by execution.
  • King Louis walked to his execution on the date of January 21st.  As he was being prepared to be executed he said, " my people, I die innocent!". He then turned to his executioners and said,"Gentlemen, I am innocent of everything of which I am accused. I hope that my blood may cement the good fortune of the French." Before he was fastened down to the guillotine, his hair was cut, so that the blade of the guillotine could move without interruption to end King Louis' life swiftly.  Also, it is believed that King Louis refused to have his hands bound with rope and only relented when they allowed his hands to be bound with his handkerchief.
  • King louis the XVI was executed on January 21st at the Place de la Révolution. Apparently, the guillotine did not sever his neck like intended, but went through the back of his head instead, falsifying the depiction of the executioner holding his head up for all to see. It has also been said that some of the people present dipped their handkerchiefs in king louis' blood.
