The Japanese people wanted more power to keep for themselves, and in order for them to make this happen, they needed to expand. However, they didn't just want to spread in their area, they wanted power all over the world.

The US froze the Japanese assets, because of the agreement of Japan and Vichy, France. They later created embargo of oil and gas experts to Japan.

Japanese soldiers confused as to what their training was about; when they found out they were going against the US, they were terrified. They had heard how great the US military was, but they knew they had to do whatever it took to win; including taking down the enemy ships.
Franklin D. Roosevelt called the attack on Pearl Harbor the "day that will live in infamy." This is because it will always be remembered as a day where people risked their lives to fight for our country, willingly.
American soldiers were surprised when the attack happened. It was something they weren't expecting, and when it came, they fought as hard as they could.
