  • The first step in percent composition is finding out the total mass of the substance.
  • Ex. H20H At. Mass: 1.0080 At. Mass: 162(1.008) + 16 = 18.016
  • The second step is to find out the total mass of each element in this substance
  • Ex. H200(Oxygen): 1 Atom = 16 g.H(Hydrogen): 2 Atoms 2.016
  • The third step is to find the percentage of each element in the susbtance.
  • H2: (2.016/18.016) x 100 = 11.19%0: (16/18) x 100 = 88.81%
  • The last step is to make sure that the percentages add up to 100 and we're done.
  • Hydrogen: 11.19%Oxygen: 88.81%11.9 + 88.1 = 100Done!
