  • Trouble for the Church
  • Martin Luther and the Scala Sancta
  • “Unless I am convinced by the testimony of the Scriptures or by clear reason (I do not trust either in the pope or in councils alone)"
  • 95 Theses
  • Why does not the pope, whose wealth today is greater than the wealth of the richest Crassus, build the basilica of St. Peter with his own money rather than with the money of poor believers?
  • On October 31, 1517, Martin Luther, angry with Pope Leo X’s new round of indulgences to help build St. Peter’s Basilica, nailed a sheet of paper with his 95 Theses on the University of Wittenberg’s chapel door.
  • Five Solas
  • Grace Alone Faith Alone Christ Alone Glory of God Alone Scripture Alone
  • In 1521, the Holy Roman emperor, Charles V, summoned Luther to appear at the Diet of Worms in Worms, Germany, in order to officially recant. Then Luther was asked whether he would retract the teachings in the books. The next day, Luther replied with his now-famous words: “Unless I am convinced by the testimony of the Scriptures or by clear reason (I do not trust either in the pope or in councils alone)"

  • Though the Reformers themselves did not use these five slogans, as such, they do capture well the points of emphasis of their preaching and teaching. It was a teaching that rocked the world and brought consequences far beyond what they could have imagined. Most importantly, it was a recovery of the gospel.
  •  Diet of Worms, meeting of the Diet  of the Holy Roman Empire held at Worms, Germany, in 1521, made famous by Martin Luther's appearance before it to respond to charges of heresy.
  • For this reason, after his defiant confession of faith before the Emperor, he was rushed away back to Wittenburg by coach. On the way back, he was overtaken by a group of Frederick the Wise’s guards disguised as highwaymen. They escorted the Reformer back to Wartburg Castle where he would remain for the next ten months.
