  • Cognitive Development (Jean Piaget's Theory)
  • Sensorimotor Stage- Infants begin to understand the world through interaction with objects. Ex.) Baby Ev messing around with a pacifier. Preoperational Stage- Increase in playing and pretending and begins at 2 with the start of language and ends around 7. Ex.) Baby Ev pretending to be Jack Sparrow. Concrete Operational Stage- Occurs between the ages of 7 to 11 and is characterized by an appropriate application of logic to situations. Ex.) Getting a ball out of the sewer.  Formal Operational Stage- Person is capable of hypothetical and deductive reasoning, occurs through the ages of 15 to 20. Ex.) Debating in my head the pros and cons of going somewhere.
  • Moral Development (Lawrence Kohlberg's Theory)
  • Preconventional Level- Consists of the obedience plus punishment and the self interest stages. Judging the morality of an action by its direct consequence. Ex.) Baby Ev deciding not to steal my brother's food based on time out. Conventional Level- Consists of the interpersonal accord and the authority orientation stages. To judge the morality of actions by comparing them to society's views and expectations.  Ex.) Dressing up nice for a fancy restaurant. Postconventional Level- Consists of the social contract and the universal ethics stages. Realization that individuals are separate from society and therefore hold their own set of unique beliefs. Ex.) Deciding to wear whatever is comfortable to the restaurant  because I can.
  • Social Development (Erik Erikson's Theory)
  • Trust v. Mistrust- 0-18 months old, the infant hopes to find security with someone. Ex.) Baby Ev gets left on the street. Autonomy v. Shame- 2-4 years old, the child begins to show the will to accomplish or accept small challenges or changes. Ex.) Baby Ev goes to the actual bathroom.
  • Initiative v. Guilt- 4-5 years old, the child begins to exhibit the ability to explore and create technologically and artistically. Ex.) Baby Ev draws and colors a picture. Industry v. Inferiority- 5-12 years old, the child begins to display competence in school and sports (mentally and physically). Ex.) Baby Ev gets an A and starts to wrestle.
