Storyboard Text

  • Alexander Oparin was a Russian biochemist, notable for his contributions to the theory of the origin of life on Earth, and particularly for the “primordial soup” theory of the evolution of lifefrom carbon-based molecules.
  • The Miller–Urey experiment (or Miller experiment) was a chemical experiment that simulated the conditions thought at the time to be present on the early Earth, and tested the chemical origin of life under those conditions
  • The Miller Urey Experiment. In the 1950's, biochemists Stanley Miller and HaroldUrey, conducted an experiment which demonstrated that several organic compounds could be formed spontaneously by simulating the conditions of Earth's early atmosphere.
  • Lynn Margulis, (born March 5, 1938, Chicago, Illinois, U.S.—died November 22, 2011, Amherst, Massachusetts), American biologist whose serial endosymbiotic theory ofeukaryotic cell development revolutionized the modern concept of how life arose on Earth.
  • Sidney W. Fox was born. In search for the origins of life, Fox explored the synthesis of amino acids from inorganic molecules, the synthesis of proteinous amino acids and amino acid polymers called “proteinoids” from inorganic moleculesand thermal energy, and created what he thought was the world‘s first protocell out of proteinoids and water.
  • The Origin of Life, Oparin proposed that the "spontaneous generation oflife" that had been attacked by Louis Pasteur did in fact occur once, but was now impossible because the conditions found on the early Earth had changed
