  • Jonas has been selected to be the next Receiver of Memory.
  • JONAS
  • Rosemary was my daughter, to be the next Receiver. She couldn't handle the painful memories all at once and was released. I haven't seen her since
  • FLASHBACK
  • I don"t want to be the Receiver of Memory anymore.
  • 11 year old Jonas lives in the Community with his parents and sister, Lily. Where nobody can see color and everything is the same. At the December Ceremony, (where children are given the jobs they have to do for the rest of their lives), he is selected to be Receiver of Memory, the most honored position in the Community.
  • His mentor is The Giver, an old man who is training him to be the next Receiver. He passes along memories to Jonas from long ago, of colors and feelings and snow, etc. The hard part about being the Receiver is that The Giver had to deal with all of the painful memories on his own and couldn't tell anyone about them.
  • Jonas, you will go Elsewhere and your memories will be leaked in the Community, causing chaos. I will stay behind to help the Community deal with the memories.
  • The Giver tells Jonas about how the Community is dull without without color and feelings or personalities and everyone is the same. The Giver's daughter Rosemary was to be the next Receiver of Memories, but she couldn't take all the painful memories so early and was released. All the memories she had gotten from The Giver were released into the Community and caused chaos.
  • The Giver shows Jonas a live video of his father with two newborn twins; he would decide who was the weaker of the two and the weaker child would be released. The weaker baby is injected with a needle. And stops breathing. Jonas then realizes that 'release' means death.
  • The Giver and Jonas develop a plan to save the Community. Jonas will go Elsewhere and his memories will flood the Community, causing chaos once again. To help them learn about colors, and being different, and feelings. The Giver will stay behind to help the Community deal with the memories and not be as overwhelmed.
  • Jonas leaves his bicycle and clothes by a river, leaves a note for his parents, and takes the baby his family is fostering (Gabriel) with him or he will be released. The Giver calls a vehicle and Jonas hides in the storage compartment with Gabriel. Jonas travels for days, and eventually him and Gabriel nearly freeze to death and starve. Soon they reach a house with colored lights, finally free from the Community.
