The Polo family (Maffeo, Marco, and Niccolò) picked up holy oil, gifts, and papal documents from Jerusalem and Acre. Their expedition to meet the Mongolian emperor Kublai Khan started in 1271 from Venice, Italy en route Silk road to reach Cathay (China) in 1274.
Silk Road
In 1275, Kublai Khan sent Marco Polo on a business mission to the port city of Hangzhou and he traveled across China. He did his mission so well that Kublai Khan decided that Marco Polo would work for him.
In 1292, the Polo's family accompanied Princess Cocachin and the wedding party consisting of a fleet of fourteen ships to Persia. The journey from Zaitun to Persia took nearly 18 months. They got the princess married to Arghun’s son, after Arghun had died. They had stayed there for nine months.
