  • At the age of 13, John Paul, a fellow of Scottish origin, started apprenticing with the British merchant Marine. Eventually he learned how repulsive slavery was and how cruel the British could be.
  • Sir, this is wrong.

  • Despite his different view of slavery, John Paul became quite the British merchant, shipping cargo and not humans.
  • Then one day ,in 1773, as a result of a mutinous dispute, John Paul killed one of his sailors
  • It was self defense!
  • I won't get a fair trial! I know! I'll change my name and flee to the colonies!
  • When the American Revolution started, John Paul Jones was commissioned into the Navy.

  • In 1779, while en route to raid some British ships in England John Paul Jones encountered the more powerful Serapis. After hours of battle, John Paul Jones is said to have said his famous words...

  • John Paul Jones then rammed into the Serapis and tied the ships together, and claimed the victory. However because his ship was badly damaged so he took over the enemy ship.
  • Set sail for the colonies!
  • We surrender.
  • After the Navy dissolved, John Paul Jones helped Russia battle the Turks for a brief period while living in Paris. He had plans to return to America, but he was found dead in his apartment, in Paris, on July 18, 1792.
