When Becca was a child, her grandmother, Gemma would always tell her, and her sisters the same story. The story was Briar Rose
Now Gemma is very old, and her health has deteriorated. Becca and her sisters go to visit her at the nursing home, but Gemma just tells them the story of Briar Rose, and makes Becca promise to find the castle, the prince, and the maker of spells. Gemma passes away soon after Beccas visit.
Becca's dad brings a box full of Gemmas things, and the family finds lots of important things such as immigration papers to America, a man that could be Gemma's husband, a mans ring, a bunch of pictures, and newspaper clippings.
Becca is intrigued and wants to find out more about her grandmother's past and keep the promise she made to her. She asks her attractive boss, Stan, for help with finding out her grandmother's past, and He suggests traveling to fort oswego for answers.
At fort oswego, Becca and Stan meet three people. One of them, Harvey, is a holocaust survivor, and the others are Americans who were in oswego when the refugees arrived. Harvey remembers Gemma and mentions that they called her "princess". This reminds her of the story, Briar Rose that Gemma would always tell.
