4 year old Tan Le along side her sister, mother and grandmother, boarded a small boat disguised as a fishing boat, to leave the dangers of Vietnam and to make a new life in Australia. the adults knew it was dangerous but it was the only option; as Tan Le's grandfather was killed by the North communists, coming down to the South.
During their voyage that took 5 days and 5 nights, Tan Le's mother carried poison, so if they were captured they would drink it so they wouldn't have to suffer.
Mother: this is poison that we must drink, if we get captured
Tan Le: what is that bottle mother?
Tan Le and her family landed in a refugee camp and stayed there for 3 months, then settled in Footscray Melbourne
How long will we be here?
Tan Le did not fit in. she got teased and there would be graffiti and people would say ' Asian go home!'
what is home?
ASIAN GO HOME!
Tan Le's mother worked double shifts on a farm and a car assembly line to pay for tuition, so the girls could get extra help in English and maths
I have to do this, for the girls
They were poor. Tan, her sister and mother, shared a bed for a very long time. As they would lye there they would listen to the grandmother walking around the house
