Communist leader Nicolae Ceuseescu, and his wife Elena, set up a powerful force in Romania. Ceueescu ruled his country with an iron grip. He hired secret police to maintain his country and eliminate all traitors.
Ceuseescu's economy was not good in the 1960's and this caused a sharp drop in living standards. This caused shortages in food including bread, flour, and sugar. He planned for rapid urbanization which caused the entire bulldozing of villages so they could be urbanized.
This angered the Romanian people and in December 1989, Ceuseescu's secret police murdered thousands of men, women, and children who were peacefully protesting. Eventually the army turned against Ceuseescu and they were executed Christmas day 1989. A new government was formed.
