Storyboard Text

  • Why, of course! So, today I can teach you students about the Rat Islands Earthquake!
  • Ms. Riggi, may we learn more about the Rat Islands Eathquake?
  • How does that form an earthquake?
  • So, it all began on February 4, 1965 when the Pacific and North American Plates collided.
  • Oh, I get it!
  • Well, the earthquake was caused at a convergent boundary, with the stress of compression and it occurred at a reverse fault, so when the two plates pushed together, it formed an earthquake.
  • Anyways,  it's epicenter was 51.29 degrees north and 178.49 degrees west of Rat Islands, North America USA. The focus depth of the earthquake was 36 kilometers (km).
  • Cool!
  • And, it had an 8.7 magnitude on the Richter Scale, and it occurred at the Denali Fault. The Mercalli Intensity was 9(IX), and it lasted for a long 160 seconds.
  • Yikes!!
  • That must have been harsh!
  • Even more, it caused a tsunami that was 32 feet high, and it unfortunately hit Shemya Island! It even caused an aftershock 2 months later which was 7.6 on the Richter Scale.
  • What's an aftershock?
  • Oh wow!!
