Willie King came to the hospital to have his right leg removed as it was badly diseased. He never thought that coming to this hospital would be the worst experience of his life.
It is a simple procedure but as any other surgery there are risks you need to be aware of.
Kayla, make sure to mark the leg that is going to be removed before taking the patient to the operating room
Yes Dr. Smith
Dr. Smith explained the procedure to Mr. King, as usual, and gave instructions to the nurse on how to prepare Mr. King for the surgery.
Dr. Smith, I just checked the patient's medical record. We are supposed to amputate the right leg not the left one!
Everything was going as expected (at least that was what everyone in the operating room thought). Then Dr. Williams notices that the leg they are removing is the wrong one and tells Dr. Smith but it's too late.
What???? I can't go back, I have to finish removing this leg now!
After the surgery Mr. King notices the mistake Dr. Smith has made and gets very angry. Mr. King also gets very upset of knowing that he still has to get his other leg amputated and will now have no legs.
You amputated the wrong leg!!! @#@$@!!!
Mr. King sues the hospital and the doctor for medical malpractice.
According to the Law, it is your responsibility to check that everything is in order before proceeding with any surgical procedure.
It was not my mistake. I gave clear instructions to the nurse on how to prepare the patient. It was her the one who did not follow the instructions given to her.
After a long trial, the hospital and Dr. Smith had to pay Mr. King 1,150,000. And also Dr. Smith's medical license was suspended for six months.
