Douglass lived on in Baltimore with the Aulds when they sent him to covey to be broken of the idea of getting to freedom and being free. The reason they sent Douglass to covey was that he was a slave breaker who could wipe the ideas of running away or other stuff from the mind of a slave.Covey noticed that douglass was different than the rest of the slaves because of what he did when they had free time. This led covey to working harder and whipping him more than the rest of the slaves.
One day Douglass was working in the corn house where he did not feel well because it was hot and the noise was really loud. So, he took a break and stumbled out of the house in front of Covey. Covey looked at him for a long time and asked “what is wrong.” Douglass said “I do not feel well and it is hot in there and so i need to get some fresh air to go back in there to work. Covey did not accept that and said “That is not acceptable”. So he looked around a saw a hickory stick took it a hit him with it. Douglass fell down and Covey told him “GET BACK UP.” Douglass tried but fell back down because he was weak. So instead of trying to get back up he took a beating.
So that night Douglass ran away to the woods. Where he met another slave named Sandy. Sandy healed his wounds and gave him something to eat. While at in the woods Douglass asked Sandy “what should I do? Should I go back and take a beating or should I stay out here and starve to death. She responded, “you should go back. But before you do i shall give you something. So went into the woods were Sandy found a “special plant”. She gave this to him and said “put this in your right side and you will never get whipped again”. Douglass did that and went back. When covey found Douglass he was really mad. So Douglass new that plant was not going to help. When Covey went to whipp Douglass he resisted. They got into a big brawl. Douglass ended up winning the fight and gained the respect of Covey.
