Legend states that Florida was accidental discovered by a man named Juan Ponce De Leon. Ponce De Leon was in search for a fountain called the Fountain of Youth which made anyone who drank from it look younger.
He set sail to the island of Bimini (in the Bahamas) in search of this fountain. Ponce De Leon landed near the city we call today, St. Augustine.
I see land aheard!
Upon landing, Ponce De Leon assumed he had discovered another island and not part of North America. Due to the land's tropical vegetation, he named it Florida.

After discovering Florida, Ponce De Leon set sail to Spain to request permission to colonize the region of Florida and Bimini. The Spanish crown granted his request and named him Governor of Florida and Bimini.

Unfortunately, in 1521, Ponce De Leon and his men were attacked by Indians shorty after arriving back to Florida. During the attack, He was shot in his leg with an arrow and died from the wound.
