  • I am a serf and I work the land in exchange for protection. 
  • Midieval Manors
  • I am a lord and get individuals to fight on my behalf, I give out portions of my land, or feuds to knights known as vassals. 
  • I am a vassal and the lord and I have many mutual obligations. 
  • System between Lord and Vassal
  • I will provide the money and soldiers and maintain the roads and the village. I will also act as a judge in deciding disputes between vassals.
  • I owe a certain amount of military service days per year, but I am allowed to have vassals of my own. I can also offer the Lord advice on occasion. 
  • I am a king, but I cannot provide protection for large amounts of land and people because of the collapse of Charlemagne's empire.
  • Origin of Feudalism
  • I am passing power into the hands of the Lords who hold large areas of land. 
  • I now have land that I can control in any way I want.
  • Included a castle, a village and fields. Different people were involved in different parts of the manor. 
  • The relationship between Lord and his vassal could easily get complicated when the vassal began to have vassals of his own. 
  • Kings exchanging power with their Lords.
