  • What Started It All
  • Lincoln is Elected
  • “A house divided against itself cannot stand”
  • Lincoln Douglas Debates
  • Slavery is not right, we need to be one and get along!
  • This man is crazy!! A radical I tell you!!
  • The Kansas Nebraska Act sparked the creation of the Republican Party, this was created to prevent slavery from spreading to the Western territory.  When Lincoln and Douglas debated the problem this caused the nation to divide into two hostile camps.
  •
  • Lincoln was elected into the republican part of the house to run against Douglas.  Lincoln spoke out about half the states being slave states and the other half not, Douglas then called him a radical.  This triggered the series of debates in 7 different districts in Illinois.
  •
  • The debates each lasted 3 hours and held in Ottawa, Freeport, Jonesboro, Charleston, Galesburg, Quincy, and Alton.  These happened from August to October.  During these debates douglas was trying to convince everyone that Lincoln was a radical who disrupted the union by not supporting slavery.  Douglas did end up defeating Lincoln.  In the end these debates got published as a book in 1860 leading to Lincolns win over Douglas.
