Louis Zamperini From Olympic Athlete to a WWII U.S. Airforce PIlot
Now that the 1936 Berlin Olympics are over, mynext goal is to serve my country and enlist in the United States Air Force.
Louis and his flight team take off on a search rescue mission for a downed plane in the ocean.
Do you want me to take over as pilot Phil?
Sure Cuppernell. We need to keep going until we find that downed plane. Hopefully the guys survived.
Get to the raft Louis, quick.
A mechanical issue causes Louis' plane to crash in the Pacific Ocean; three of the crew members survive including Louis.
How can I get to the raft when I am tangled in a bunch of wires from the machine guns?
Louis Zamperini (born on January 26 1917) was a phenomenal runner but after his one showing in the Olympics, he decided to enlist in the United States Air Force.
After 46 days in a raft with only two people left from the original crew, a Japanese island is in sight.
I'm weak but yes, I see land as well Russel. If only Mac could have held on.
The flight team, which included Louis Zamperini, Russel Phillips, Charleton Cuppernell, and Francis McNamarna took off on a rescue mission in a plane they had never used before. That became a problem when the engine died and they were unsure how to revive the engine.
At a Japanese POW camp, Mutsuhiro Watanabe makes life miserable for Louis.
If you do not obey orders, I am going to make life even harder for you.
Only three heads popped up out of the water after the plane crashed. Louis was one of them but he was tangled up in wires. He frantically kicked and escaped. Louis made his way to the raft with Russel Phillips and Francis McNamara.
Japan surrenders the war and Louis goes back to the USA.
There were only two men left on the raft, Russel and Louis. They spotted land and were excited but that lasted only for a minute. They soon realized they were on a Japanese island and certainly destined for trouble.
Finally Louis! I see land buddy. We are going to make it!
Shortly after reaching the island, Louis was transferred to a POW camp in Japan. The leader was Mutsuhiro Watanabe who tortured Louis. Mutsuhiro whipped Louis with his belt, starved him, and almost killed him multiple times.
In 1945, Japan finally surrendered the war. Louis was ecstatic and so excited that he got to go home to his family who actually thought he was dead. His family held a coming home party after Louis arrived in Long Beach, California.
Finally, almost home in Long Beach! I see my family waiting!!
Oh my gosh! I did not think I would ever see you again!
How did you survive? What happened?Tell me all about it.
