  • People are sometimes selfish and cruel which result in consequences that also hurt others.
  • Julia Crowne is a caring, smart, loving, and tough women who would do anything for her daughter. Juila is one of the two narrators in this  book and shown through her choices she is very emotionally and physically strong. She develops a lot throughout the story and it shows she can go from a scared mother trying to get through divorce to a strong idependent mother who was willing to do anything to protect her daughter.
  • ¨ Juila arched her back again. She rotated her torso so that the hand she was trying to free was under the hard bone on her hip.  Then she lifted her hip off the ground and slammed herself down onto the hand as hard as she could. ¨ (364)
  •  Edna Crowne is the mother in-Law to Julia and grandmother to Anna. Edna is a very clever, controlling, selfish and rude women. She developes throughout the story as well but many not in a good way. Edna went a still controlling mother who had to always get her way to a kidnapping grandmother and murderer.
  • ¨Edna blocked the light coming through the door. 'So' She said 'Is there anything in here' Juila started to shake 'no' she said. 'no. please god, no' "(329)
  • The main theme of the story after anna is people are sometimes selfish and cruel which result in consequences that also hurt others.  The reader learns this when they reach the end of the book. Edna was such a horrible person her whole life and she took things to far and ended up getting consequences for it but to get to that she hurt everyone she cared so little about.
  • "Nancy is a fan Southern Thailand, where she has helped out at a local clinic in the past. And which is where she has been for past three months. 'Edna Crowne, he snaps. Edna Crowne.  You nod. He scowls and motions for you to put out your hands. You do so. He produces a pair of handcuffs and snaps them shut."(402, 406)
  • Around the end of the book Julia had to make a decision that could possible have ruined her whole life. Juila broke her own hand so that she could get free. The scene showed imagery by explaining the whole situation that the reader could completley picture it.
  • There was many scenes that showed suspense but this one mainly because this is the moment that Juila and some readers come to the conclusion that Edna was the kidnapper. This peticular scene showed suspense because Edna knew Juila realized that she had and the reader wonder what will Edna do next.
  • Edna had fled to another country which creates the setting of where Edna will arrested. Edna fled to Southern Thailand to hide but it didn't work out so well and in the end of the book they finally get her into custody.
