  • Texas isn't a country. Is it?
  • I don't know.
  • Texas refrained from annexing because it would make the United States an uneven number of slave states and slave free states and they didn't want to upset Mexico.
  • Polk and Manifest Destiny (15.1)
  • The United States pays off the dept of 12 million dollar dept that Texas has.
  • Mex-American War Ends (15.3)
  • Fine! We will give the land!
  • Mexico never recognized Texas independence because they thought they owned Texas. They were also worried about there western assets as well.
  • Pearce Plan (15.3)
  • Many Americans, in the 1800s, believed it was the United States’ destiny to expand from coast to coast.
  • Our goal is to expand land from coast to coast!
  • Mexico ceded, or gave up, all of its territory between Texas and the Pacific Ocean in the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.
  • Texas would give up claim to New Mexico in exchange for $10 million. The money was used to pay off Texas’ public debt. The Pearce Plan was adopted on September 9, 1850. Although Texas lost almost one-third of its territory under this plan.
