In " The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street' by Rod Serling , one of the main themes is fear can spread and make you do crazy things . In the novel , everyone was curious and nervous of who really was the monster . The lights turned off on their block and that caused a big madness . Tommy , the little boy mentioned that they were monsters here who looked just like humans They didn't know what else to do until they started finding everything strange of each other then accusing one another of monsters . They accused Mr. Goodman of a monster because his car was the only car that started up in the block . They also accused Steve of a radio he had that he never mentioned to them and they thought that was suspicious . They said Tommy , the little boy was the monster for knowing that there were monsters coming after them who looked just like regular human beings. Lastly , they accused Charlie of being the monster because his house was full of lights while everyone else in the neighborhood lights were all cut off . They spotted a walking man coming toward them . Not knowing who the man was , it was actually their friend Pete who has been gone to check what had actually happened to all the lights , cars , and everything else that has been cut off . Charlie grabbed a shotgun and shot the man out of fear . Fear can cause other people to do crazy things to each other even when not expected .
