The battle of Marathon. Is when King Darius of Persia ordered his troops to land at marathon. The Greek soldiers did not come, so the Persians troops waited for a few days. When the Greeks did not come so the Persians packed up camp. This is when the Greeks decided to strike, the defenseless Persians got slaughtered.

King Leonidas of Sparta originally led 7000 men at Thermopalye, but after a traitor told the Persians a path that would lead around the Greek line he dismissed most of his troops letting only 300 spartan to stay. The Spartans led a valiant effort against the Persians but eventually got surrounded and slaughtered.
Spartans! We will hold this line until all our enemies die. Or we do.
The battle at Salamis is where Themistocles put his plan into play. He did not what the Spartans effort to be in vain. Greece lured the Persians into the Strait of Salamis. There the smaller more maneuverable greek ships were able to sink 300 Persian ships.
The battle of Platea is where all the Greeks banded to together to defeat the Persians once and for all. Despite the odds the greeks defeted the Persians.
After their loss in Greece. The Persian empire was not able to sustain their empire. So the remaining kings spent the rest of the empire's riches on luxury items and waited for the empire to fall.

It is a shame that the empire did not last longer. But we cannot delay the inevitable.
