In 1519, this nobleman named Hernan Cortes sailed from Cuba to Mexico after hearing about the Aztec Empire. He wanted to conquer them, taking their riches.
A Short Trip
Hernan came on the day the Aztecs believed a god was coming to attack them, so they thought Hernan was the god. They gave him their treasures to make him go away, but this only made him more determined to take them down.
Hernan did not fight the Aztecs, so he was invited into the capital by the emperor. He then took the emperor prisoner. The emperor was prisoner for 6 months.
The Aztec Ruins
After a short trip away from the Aztec capital, Cortes returned to a shocking sight. As he entered the city, the Aztecs attacked. Cortes and his army were surrounded by fierce warriors. The spaniards fled the city, filling their pockets with gold.
After their defeat, the spaniards surrounded the Aztec capital for nearly a year. Many of the Aztecs had been weakened by smallpox, and began to starve to death. When Cortes and his army attacked in 1521, the Aztecs were finally defeated.
The spaniards now rule all of Mexico. The beautiful and mighty Aztec empire now lies in ruins.
