  • Inciting Incident
  • Mama, am I going to be okay?
  • You're going to be okay. We are just going to go to the big white tent so that they can help you feel better.
  • Rising Action
  • Naya starts her journey on her first trip to get water. "Going was easy." It will take her at least 3 hours to get to the pond. She leaves at sunrise so she has enough time to get back, eat, and go to the pond again.
  • Rising Action
  • Akeer, Naya's sister's condition gets worse for she had been complaining two days ago that she had bad stomach pains. "Naya had been annoyed by all the whining. Now she felt guilty, for she could see that her sister no longer had enough strength to complain." Her sister gets better quickly for after two doses of the medicine, she was back to her old self again. The water is making her sick but they cannot do anything about it because if they did boil the water to a count of 200 it would be gone.
  • Rising Action
  • Nya sees men enter her village with strange machines. She asks her brother Dep what was going on and he said that there was water in between two trees. "This is the spot, halfway between the two largest trees. We will find the water here...There wasn't a single drop of water on that spot, unless it was raining!"
  • Rising Action
  • The people in Nya's village have started working on clearing the area between the two trees. This will make way for the water that the two men claimed was there. "Smaller trees and bushes had to be burned or uprooted...dangerous work... poisonous snakes and scorpions..."
  • Women, along with Nya's mother walked between the pond and village to get rocks. The pile of rocks grows bigger with every rock. "Nya's mother tied the baby on her back and walked with several other women to a place between the village and the pond.
  • The people from Nya's village start breaking down the rocks to gravel. Nya doesn't know why they are doing this but the pile of gravel grows. "Using tools borrowed from the visitors, pounded the rocks to break them up into gravel."
