This is where Grendel comes from; his ancestors had a child named Conniving Cain. Conniving Cain created a line of evil descendants. No one quite knows why Cain was born so evil, and everyone after him were so evil as well.
Grendel is a powerful, cave-dwelling, mean musty monster. He lives in the depths of a dark cave.
In this scene Grendel is watching the people of Denmark "rejoicing" and "singing" from his swamp.
