  • There were many causes of the Spanish American war.
  • There was lots of yellow journalism, trying to get America to participate.
  • The New York World
  • The New York Morning Journal
  • Another cause of the war was the explosion of the U.S.S. Maine.
  • One cause was Cuba's rebellion against Spain. They didn't want to be ruled by Spain.
  • President McKinley tried to avoid war by making a list of demands.
  • There was a competition between the New York Morning Journal and The New York World.
  • Spain accepted all the demands except Cuba's Independence.
  • WAR!
  • An American ship in Manila Bay exploded and the newspapers claimed the Spanish did it.
  • The U.S. signed the Treaty of Paris with Spain in 1898.
  • They were Cuba's independence, compensation for the Maine, and an end to reconsentration camps.
  • So President McKinley sent a war message to Congress on April 11, 1898.
  • It gave Cuba their Independence and paid Puerto Rico, the Philippines, and the Pacific Island of Guam. These became territories of the U.S.
  • The Treaty of Paris
