The city-state of Sparta was governed by two kings and a council of twenty-eight elders. This form of government is known as an Oligarchy.
The government of Athens was a Democracy. The city-state was ruled by a council of 500 who were elected by the citizens. This council voted on laws for all citizens.
Sparta relied on slaves called helots to work their farms and provide the city-state with a food supply. This is known as an agrarian society.
The city-state of Athens by the 5th century B.C.E was the foremost trading power in the Mediterranean. This allowed Athens to acquire a level of wealth unknown to the Spartan city-state.
Spartan men lived a rigorous, military-based lifestyle. From the age of seven, they trained to be soldiers. Men lived in barracks until their 30th birthday, at which time they could also vote.
Athenian society emphasized education and improvements in the arts and sciences. Athenian men could receive a good education and pursue many kinds of pleasures. Military service was voluntary.
