  • Protagonist
  • Conflict
  • Man vs. Society
  • Emily's father is the antagonist in the story .He is part of the main conflict of Emily isolating herself. Before his passing he did not let any men marry Emily, if he let her marry then she would have a chance of having a support system after his passing. "We remembered all the young men her father had driven away."
  • Emily is a static protagonist of the story. She is displayed as static because of her never changing character throughout the story.  She was the main factor in both of the major conflicts in the story ranging from the horrific stench coming from her house or her failure to obey the tax laws. " So she vanished them, horse and foot, just as she had vanished their fathers thirty years before about the smell."
  • Man vs, Society: In this story Emily is one person against society. It starts off with her refusing to pay her taxes. "Miss Emily said. "Perhaps he considers himself the sheriff.. I have no taxes in Jefferson." She is differing from the societal norms. She disobeys  the Law authority and does not pay her taxes like everyone else is her town does. She also disturbs the neighborhood with the horrid smell coming from her house, causing lime to be placed around her yard.
