"Rainsford froze there, every muscle tensed for a spring. but the sharp eyes of the hunter stopped before they reached the limb where Rainsford lay; a smile spread of his brown face. Very deliberately he blew a smoke ring into the air"
"The dead tree, delicately adjusted to rest one the cut living one, crashed down and struck the general a glancing blow on the shoulder as it fell;but for his alertness, he must have been smashed beneath it.
"You've done well, Rainsford. Your Burmese tiger pit has claimed one of my best dogs."
Rainsford was holding his breath fearing for his life. As the general smiled, knowing his whereabouts. he blew a smoke ring and walked away. Rainsford realized the generals skills and the thought that general Zaroff knew he was there and was playing with him horrified Rainsford.
Rainsford was hopeful that General was crushed by his trap he learned from hunting in Malacca. But the general was only slightly wounded. Rainsford, panic stricken, knew he had to do better.
"I congratulate you, you have won the game."
"I am still a beast at bay, get ready General Zaroff."
Rainsford was excited when he heard the branches breaking over his trap, until he saw the general standing next to it. He was disappointed and fearful for his life yet again.
Rainsford was disappointed that the General was still alive, but it was not a total fail, because there is one less person hunting him.
"He shinned excitedly up a tree and looked back. His pursuers had stopped. But the hope that was in Rainsford's brain when he climbed died, for he saw in the shadow valley that General Zaroff was still on his feet, but Ivan was not."
Rainsford knows he'd still be hunted by General Zaroff if he left, so he confronts him and does the thing that he was against, and that started the hunt. He becomes a murderer.
